Often Water Tanks built within 5 miles of a public airport will require study
Water Tanks (such as those to the left) can both exceed FAR 77 criteria and have an effect on Airport Navigational Aids as well as Enroute VORs. The reflection of navigational signals as well as the blocking or shadowing of navigational facilities can cause a hazard to air navigation. The proposed site and height above ground level should be studied before any major expenditures are made on the project.
TowerSAFE International has done many of these studies; and, in some cases, relocation was required when height could not be lowered because of adjacent tie-in tanks.
All of these tanks could require FAA 7460-1 Filing and Approval
