Aircraft flying over or near landfills can expect birds
In recognition of the increased risk of serious aircraft damage or the loss of human life that can result from a wildlife strike, the FAA may require the development of a specific plan when a project is considered. Often you do not think of a landfill or waste dump as a hazard to air navigation...but it is! Landfills are often zoned or placed near airports--away from residential areas--just like airports. Well the birds are out for an easy meal and what better place than a dump/landfill near the airport. The FAA needs to study these areas to determine if they indeed will become hazards to air navigation. Like the photos to the left, the hazard is real. Other than the "dented wing" in the top photo, major damage can be sustained and bring down aircraft as evidenced in bottom photo. To help prevent the occurrence of incidents/accidents such as these, close liaison between your airspace consultant, local planning and zoning officials, and the FAA are mandated.
